For exteriors, the best time to paint is when the weather is pleasant, without risk of high humidity or rain on the horizon. It is best to avoid painting in extreme temperatures and humid conditions. For interiors, there are no such restrictions − an ambient temperature in-home and outside is best. It is best to have some ventilation during and immediately after painting in order to dissipate fumes, and also help with drying.

Shell Paints suggests that distemper surfacing be scraped off completely. After this, one coat of Shell Alkali Resisting Primer Sealer or Shell Interior/Exterior Primer Sealer must be applied, followed by 2-3 coats of interior/exterior emulsion paint.

1. The surface to be painted must be cleaned thoroughly using a wire brush and clean water. All traces of loose paint, algae, dust, and grime must be removed. Areas where there is a high potential for algae growth must be cleaned using a bio-wash solution before painting.
2. Cracks, if any, on the surface to be painted must be closed.
3. Areas with constant dampness must be identified and corrected prior to painting. The source of the leak must be fixed permanently.
4. If the substrate shows signs of chalkiness, a primer with anti-efflorescence properties like the Shell Alkali Resisting Primer Sealer must be used.

Please make sure that the walls are dry completely before starting the painting work.

Emulsion Paints are water based paints which are more long-lasting when compared to distemper paint. Distempers are more conservative form of paint and have lesser durability than emulsions. Emulsions boast of a smoother finish as compared to distempers.

Washable Paint helps to keep your walls fresh and clean by offering the ability to clean dirt, stains etc. without affecting the paint film. Washable Wall Paints are very easy to clean with mild soap solution and a soft sponge. Wall Paints that have high emulsion content, a component that gives the paint higher wet scrub resistance, will have a better washability and durability.
